Diversity in the 21st Century: Preparing the Workforce

The 2006 Diversity Conference featured a lineup of spearkers who have had a powerful influence on advancing cultural diversity in America, including Mae Jemison, first woman of color to go into space aboard the space shuttle Endeavor in 1992, and Henry Cisneros, who served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development from 1993 to 1997 under President Clinton. The conference also included concurrent sessions designed to address multiple issues for varying audiences, including people of different racial, gender and ethnic backgrounds and a series of University Dialogues that offered an opportunity for the University community, to engage in substantive discussion of key issues facing the academy and society as a whole.

The 2005 Diversity Conference features a lineup of spearkers who have a powerful influence on advancing cultural diversity in America, including Morris Dees, founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center; N. Scott Momaday, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for his novel, The House Made of Dawn; and Aly Coln, leader of the Poynter Institute's reporting, writing and editing group. The conference also offers workshops for the public and local school children on a variety of topics as well as a cultural extravaganza for the community. Topics addressed in the workshops include equal opportunities in the workplace and for educational opportunities, cultural competency training, a comparative look at American cultural values and why they conflict with values from other countries, and discussion about diversity initiatives in the science, technology, engineering and mathematic disciplines. It is designed to address multiple issues for varying audiences, including people of different racial, gender and ethnic backgrounds.
